NBC Washington posted a piece today about the syndication of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and how it’s going to be pretty hard to clean up the show for TV Land’s audiences.
You know, the majority of whom tune in for re-runs of “The Andy Griffith Show” and “Sanford and Son.”
I worried about the same thing when they started showing “The Sopranos” on A&E, but for the most part, nothing’s really lost. You still get most of the effect.
This, though? I’m not so sure. How are you going to clean up any of Susie’s rants at Larry? You may as well hit the “bleep” key and just hang on for a bit. If you mute her, you could have viewers across the country sure their TV’s broken.
Somehow, I agree with the writer of the article — it’s not going to be as funny to bleep out the kids calling Larry a bald asshole.

I honestly think it adds to the comedy when they beep stuff out rather than muting or substituting words.
I agree with Jamie to a point. When it comes to the F word for sure. Mohammad the Angry Teddy bear did a top ten last night using the f-word. I let it go with no censor. This morning I added the censor and it came out a hell of a lot funnier!
Sometimes, word substitution can definitely add some comedy, such as “I’m one mean melon-farmer”, or “Cheese and rice!” In a drama, though, it does tend to detract from the mood.
I didn’t watch the airing of Dexter on ABC, but I can only imagine the hash the censors made of his sister Deb; just about every other word out of her mouth is an obscenity.
You know what you totally just reminded me of, JSB?
When they show “The Big Lebowski” on basic cable and Walter’s beating up the car with a crowbar and he says, “You see what happens when you fool a stranger in the Alps.”
… Fool a stranger in the Alps.
